A two-year experiment was conducted in northeastern Israel to study the effects of various defoliation regimes on biomass partitioning between vegetative and reproductive structures in a perennial and an annual Mediterranean grass. Greater insight into the mechanisms regulating biomass partitioning after defoliation enables ecologists and rangeland managers to interpret and predict population and community dynamics in Mediterranean grasslands more efficiently. Two typical Mediterranean grasses, Triticum dicoccoides, an annual species, and Hordeum bulbosum, a perennial species, were grown in containers in the open. They were subjected to a series of defoliation treatments that comprised three clipping frequencies and three clipping heights in a full...

Current and future land use and land cover scenarios in the Arroio Marrecas watershed AGRIAMBI
Tornquist,Carlos G.; Silva,Diego S. da.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated historic land use and land cover changes in the Arroio Marrecas watershed (Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul state of Brazil) and simulated future land use scenarios until 2034. Spatial and temporal simulations were conducted with the Conversion of Land Use and its Effects - Small Regional Extent (CLUE-S) model. Three land use scenarios were developed to include public policies and agricultural trends in the study region for 20 years (2015-2034). Geospatial analysis of different land uses showed that areas that were originally covered grasslands and forests decreased, which can be attributed to the expansion of intensive agricultural uses, such as fruit farming/forestry and urbanization. The reallocation dynamics of land use...

Effects of flooding on the spatial distribution of soil seed and spore banks of native grasslands of the Pantanal wetland Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Patricia Carla de; Torezan,José Marcelo Domingues; Cunha,Catia Nunes da.
ABSTRACTTo better understand the role that flooding plays in shaping plant communities of native floodable grasslands of the Pantanal and to characterize the spatial distribution of plants, we present the results of a survey of soil seed and spore banks using the seedling emergence method. We hypothesized that terrain subjected to the deepest and longest flooding should have higher propagule abundance and richness. The species composition and distribution of seeds and spores in the soil were assessed at five sites using three sampling positions at each according to inundation intensity. In each sample position 2cm-thick soil samples were collected in quadrats to a depth of 10cm. Litter was also collected as an independent layer. Sample monitoring in the...

Factors influencing seed germination in Cerrado grasses Acta Botanica
Kolb,Rosana Marta; Pilon,Natashi Aparecida Lima; Durigan,Giselda.
Few studies address the ecology of herbs of Cerrado grasslands, which are ecosystems where the long dry season, high temperatures, insolation, fire and invasive grasses greatly influencing germination and the establishment of plants. We assessed germination of 13 species of Poaceae from Cerrado grasslands under nursery conditions or in germination chambers, the latter with i) recently collected seeds and seeds after six months storage, ii) under constant and alternating temperatures, and iii) in the presence and absence of light. Germinability, mean germination time (MGT) and required light were quantified to elucidate factors involved in successful germination. Germinability was low for most grasses, probably because of low seed viability. For most...

Genetic diversity and population structure of naturally rare Calibrachoa species with small distribution in southern Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
John,Ana Laura de Wallau; Mäder,Geraldo; Fregonezi,Jeferson N.; Freitas,Loreta B..
Abstract Calibrachoa is a South-American genus comprising 27 species, several considered endemic or rare; few were subjects in genetic studies. We attempted to generate new data about the phylogenetically related and rare species C. eglandulata, C. sendtneriana, C. serrulata, and C. spathulata concerning their genetic diversity and population structure, which, coupled with their known restricted distribution, could help access their conservation status and contribute to the study of the Brazilian biodiversity. We sequenced 88 individuals for plastid intergenic spacers and genotyped 186 individuals for five microsatellite loci. Compared among each other, C. sendtneriana and C. serrulata presented the highest values of genetic diversity [π% (sd) = 0.23...

Houseflies speaking for the conservation of natural areas: a broad sampling of Muscidae (Diptera) on coastal plains of the Pampa biome, Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Zafalon-Silva,Ândrio; Kirst,Frederico Dutra; Krüger,Rodrigo Ferreira.
ABSTRACT The Brazilian Coastal Plain of the Pampa Biome (CPPB), has suffered fragmentation caused by resource extraction and cattle raising. In turn, conservation proposals are needed to prevent the anthropisation of Pampa natural areas. The first step towards conservation proposals by using insects is fauna inventories, providing data support for legislators. Thus, we undertook a regional and broad-scale sampling survey to investigate the diversity of Muscidae flies in protected and non-protected areas of CPPB. In addition, we carried out an ecological guild diversity analysis as a metric approach of bioindication. The Muscidae sampling resulted in 6314 specimens, 98 species taxa in 31 genera. Based on diversity estimators, our sampling represents 70-86%...

Land-Use and Land Cover Dynamics in South American Temperate Grasslands Ecology and Society
In the Río de la Plata grasslands (RPG) biogeographical region of South America, agricultural activities have undergone important changes during the last 15–18 years because of technological improvements and new national and international market conditions. We characterized changes in the landscape structure between 1985–1989 and 2002–2004 for eight pilot areas distributed across the main regional environmental gradients. These areas incorporated approximately 35% of the 7.5 × 105 km&#178 of the system. Our approach involved the generation of land-use and land cover maps, the analysis of landscape metrics, and the computation of annual transition probabilities between land cover types. All of the...

Microbial quality of soil from the Pampa biome in response to different grazing pressures Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vargas,Rafael S.; Bataiolli,Renata; da Costa,Pedro B.; Lisboa,Bruno; Passaglia,Luciane Maria P.; Beneduzi,Anelise; Vargas,Luciano K..
The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different grazing pressures on the activity and diversity of soil bacteria. We performed a long-term experiment in Eldorado do Sul, southern Brazil, that assessed three levels of grazing pressure: high pressure (HP), with 4% herbage allowance (HA), moderate pressure (MP), with 12% HA, and low pressure (LP), with 16% HA. Two reference areas were also assessed, one of never-grazed native vegetation (NG) and another of regenerated vegetation after two years of grazing (RG). Soil samples were evaluated for microbial biomass and enzymatic (β-glucosidase, arylsulfatase and urease) activities. The structure of the bacterial community and the population of diazotrophic bacteria were evaluated by RFLP of the 16S...

Population analysis of white grubs (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) throughout the Brazilian Pampa biome Rev. Bras. entomol.
Valmorbida,Ivair; Cherman,Mariana Alejandra; Perini,Clérison Régis; Cavallin,Lucas de Arruda; Guedes,Jerson Vanderlei Carús.
ABSTRACT The replacement of natural grassland by cultivated areas might favor the increase in abundance of some root-feeding species such as the white grubs, which may become a constraint for field crop production. This research aimed to assay the population density and geographical distribution of white grubs pest and other species in natural grassland and cultivated areas throughout the Brazilian Pampa biome. White grubs were sampled in 18 locations in both landscape use types and identified. Population density (number of larvae m-2) was calculated for each recorded species and sorted within two groups (pest species and other species), compared between natural grasslands and cultivated areas, as well as among locations. A dendrogram to evaluate species...

POTENTIAL FOR HUNGARIAN GRASSLANDS IN INTEGRATED RURAL DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Nagy, Geza.
Sustainability and multifunctionality, two key principles, which will determine future development in any activities. On the bases of these principles, society as a whole has already outlined future expectations towards rural areas. Rural functions (economic, ecological and socio-cultural ones) have been declared in European Charter for Rural Areas. To what extend can different rural development initiatives meet these functions? The question may be answered by using the method of multifunctional rural resource analysis (NAGY, 2007). The paper is investigating the potential for Hungarian grasslands by using this methodology. It is concluded that our grasslands, as land use systems in their present conditions can participate in integrated rural development...

Seed traits of species from South Brazilian grasslands with contrasting distribution Acta Botanica
Martins,Alexandre Cristante; Marchioretto,Rafaella Migliavacca; Vieira,Ariane Tonetto; Stiehl-Alves,Eudes Maria; Santos,Eliane Kaltchuk dos; Souza-Chies,Tatiana Teixeira de.
ABSTRACT South Brazilian grasslands are among the most species-rich grasslands worldwide yet they have been suffering ongoing degradation due to land-use. Little is known about the reproductive ecology of the native species of these grasslands. Thus, our goal was to characterize seed traits and germination requirements of three native species of the tribe Tigridieae (Iridaceae, Iridoideae) due to its richness in the Pampa biome and the contrasting morphology, cytogenetics, and geographic distributions of its representatives. We tested if closely related species possess similar seed traits and whether species with wider distributions have broader germination requirements. Seed production and mass were estimated, and morphological analyses, germination...

Soil invertebrates in southern Brazilian Araucaria forest - grassland mosaic: differences between disturbed and undisturbed areas Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Frainer,André; Duarte,Marcelo M..
Soil invertebrate distribution in Araucaria forest, grassland and edge habitats was studied in both disturbed and undisturbed areas in southern Brazil. Mean-density and taxa compositions were verified. Invertebrate densities differed between grassland and the other two habitats in the undisturbed area but not across the disturbed one. At the disturbed area taxa differed between the grassland and the other two habitats. The undisturbed area, on the other hand, presented taxa differences only between the grassland and the forest habitats. Acari, Arachnida and Collembola were the most sensitive taxa for detecting differences across habitats in both areas. At the disturbed area, these taxa presented densities lowering from the forest to the grassland. At the...

Tadpole of Pithecopus rusticus (Bruschi, Lucas, Garcia & Recco-Pimentel, 2014) (Anura, Phyllomedusidae): description of external morphology and natural history notes of a microendemic species Biota Neotropica
Bastiani,Veluma Ialú Molinari De; Boschetti,Joana Priscilla; Santos,Tiago Gomes dos; Lucas,Elaine Maria.
Abstract: Pithecopus rusticus is a newly described species, of which information on its natural history, vocalization and tadpole morphology are still lacking. Here, we describe the larval external morphology of P. rusticus from the type locality, in the municipality of Água Doce, state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, comparing it with that of other species of the genus Pithecopus and providing information on its natural history. Eggs from two spawns were collected and kept in the laboratory until hatching. The tadpoles of P. rusticus belong to the suspension-rasper guild. At Gosner stage 37, the tadpoles showed: body shape oval in dorsal view and triangular in lateral view; a tooth row formula of 2(2)/3(1); the third lower row six times shorter than...

Total aboveground plant biomass is more strongly affected by climate than species diversity on a grassland in Liaoning, China Phyton
Zhou,C; Busso,C; Liu,J; Yang,YG; Sun,Y; Fang,YZ; Zhang,QQ; Zhou,YB; Wang,YN; Zhang,Z; Wang,ZW; Yang,YF.
The objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between total aboveground plant biomass versus altitude, latitude, longitude, mean annual temperature, mean annual precipitation, and species diversity. Simple linear regression analysis was used to study these relationships. Results showed that altitude was significantly, positively (R² = 0.038, P<0.01) related with total plant aboveground biomass. Meanwhile, when longitude (R² = 0.124, P<0.001) and latitude (R² = 0.221, P<0.001) increased, total aboveground biomass decreased. The relationship between biomass and mean annual precipitation was significantly, positively linear (R² = 0.149, P<0.001). Mean annual temperature was signifcantly, negatively correlated with biomass (R² =...

Uomo e montagna tra economia tradizionale e cambiamenti climatici: il caso del Pasubio tra XVIII e XX secolo AgEcon
Avanzini, Marco; Salvador, Isabella; Gios, Geremia.
Upland population levels are strongly correlated to environmental dynamics such as morphology, exposure and climate. A temperature fall leads to a shortening of the plant growth season, which can lead to lower pasture productivity and thus livestock can spend shorter periods in the mountains. The aim of this research is to correlate natural climate constraints with variation in the grasslands value in a selection of pastures located between 1100 and 1800 m in the Pasubio Massif (Italian Southern Alps, Trento). The correlation of this trend (derived from historical documents) with climatic oscillations in the same area derived from speleothems reveals that the variation in upland value was strictly linked to temperature and climate variations
